Muslim Bar Association of New York Holds Annual General Meetin

By Muhammad Usman Faridi, Esq.
On April 28, 2009, Muslim legal professionals and students gathered for the fourth Annual General Meeting of the Muslim Bar Association of New York, a professional association for Muslim lawyers and law students. The event was held in midtown Manhattan at the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP.

The meeting’s keynote speaker was the Honorable Elizabeth Stong, a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in Brooklyn, New York. Judge Stong has frequently traveled to many Muslim countries, including Algeria, Tunisia and Oman, to train judges in business reorganization and liquidation issues.

During her presentation, Judge Stong noted that MuBANY has become a critical part of the New York legal community and has been successful in educating the local and national community about matters affecting Muslims. Judge Stong also discussed her experiences from travels in the Middle East and how interacting with Muslim judges have added to her judicial perspective. Judge Stong was introduced by Diane Aboushi, a MuBANY Director. The meeting was called to order by outgoing MuBANY Director Sami Elmansoury. MuBANY Vice-President Asaad K. Siddiqi discussed MuBANY’s activities over the previous year. He noted that MuBANY members made great strides in voter registration and protection work during the November 2008 elections. These efforts were led by Ms. Aboushi.

Also highlighted were MuBANY’s efforts to assist law students and lawyers who have either lost their jobs or have had difficulty securing employment during the recent economic downturn. In response, MuBANY organized a series of career development and job skills events in order to prepare lawyers and law students for the legal job market.

Mr. Siddiqi also discussed other MuBANY projects and highlights from the past year, including letters to bar associations and law firms about the observance of Ramadan and to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee regarding privacy violations faced by Americans returning from overseas travel. MuBANY also wrote to the former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to applaud his comments on Meet the Press in October 2008 regarding the patriotic contributions of Muslim Americans. MuBANY also co-drafted a full-page open letter in The New York Times to President Barrack Obama regarding the situation in Gaza in early 2009.

Tanzina Chowdhury announced the awaited election results. Diane Aboushi, Kiran Siddiqi, Saema Somalya, Manar Waheed, and Muhammad U. Faridi were elected to the association’s Board of Directors. Ms. Chowdhury and Subhan Ali served as election monitors to ensure an open and democratic election process.
